School of TCM Launches the Nanqiang Xinglin Lecture Series

The School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) launched the inaugural Nanqiang Xinglin Lecture Series (南强杏林讲座) on 1 July 2026 at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM).

The first lecture, titled “Exploring the Academic Concept of Yang Activation Through Gui Zhi Tang” (从桂枝汤探讨通阳学术思想), was delivered by Prof. Dr Chen Shaodong, Dean of the School of TCM. The lecture aimed to promote the inheritance of TCM classics and strengthen academic exchange among lecturers and students.

Using the classical TCM formula Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) as the foundation, Prof. Chen explored the academic concept of Yang activation (Tong Yang) through classical texts, including the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease). He discussed the formula’s composition, therapeutic principles, and pharmacological mechanisms, while explaining how traditional TCM theories can be examined alongside modern medical research.

The lecture concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which participants discussed the clinical applications of Gui Zhi Tang and the broader significance of the Yang activation concept.

Moving forward, the School of TCM plans to organize Nanqiang Xinglin lecture every month, providing lecturers and students with opportunities to learn from TCM experts, deepen their understanding of classical theories, and broaden their academic perspectives. The lecture series also serves as a platform to promote academic exchange and support the development of Chinese medicine.

The name Nanqiang Xinglin reflects the School’s commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of TCM. “Nanqiang” (南强), meaning “Strength of the South”, originates from Xiamen University's educational heritage, while “Xinglin” (杏林), a traditional synonym for the TCM profession, symbolizes medical ethics and the legacy of Chinese medicine.
