Liu Mengru, a year 3 Computer Science student at Xiamen University Malaysia, won the Silver Award at the New York Product Design Awards 2026.

Her project, Multifunctional Smart Desk Lamp, was recognized in the Lighting – Lighting Innovation category. The design integrates adaptive lighting, modular storage, wireless charging, Bluetooth audio, and ambient interaction into a single vertical structure. By combining several daily-use functions in one product, it aims to help users reduce desk clutter, manage limited workspace, and create a more organized study or work environment.

Reflecting on the achievement, Liu Mengru shared that the award was a meaningful milestone in her academic journey. As a Computer Science student exploring design innovation, she said the recognition strengthened her confidence in interdisciplinary approaches that combine computing, human-computer interaction, and product design.

She also expressed appreciation to Dr. Burra Venkata Durga Kumar and Dr. Mohammed N. M. Ali for their guidance and support throughout the project.

Looking ahead, Liu Mengru plans to further develop the project through user testing, smart-home ecosystem integration, and more sustainable design strategies.
