My name is Kalumba. Or, as most of my friends and anyone who interacted with me during my time in Malaysia knew me — SWAZ. I am one of the first-degree graduates of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) from Zambia. Just as importantly, I was one of the first Zambian students there to begin with. That is where my story at XMUM begins.

XMU Alumnus Sends 2,000 Commemorative T-Shirts to Celebrate XMUM's 10th Anniversary
2,000 commemorative T-shirts arrived at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) from Xiamen, China, as a gift from a Xiamen University alumnus to celebrate the branch campus's 10th anniversary.The T-shirts were made by Li Hongdun, a Class of 1999 graduate of XMU's Department of International Economics and Trade and founder of HanTon International. Having worked in the apparel industry for over 20 years, he decided to create a special batch of T-shirts for XMUM after learning about the celebrations.

At my grandfather’s funeral, my uncle—a diving instructor—told me all about his adventures at sea. I sat on a peeling leather sofa, watching his video recordings of sharks and reefs as he told me the ocean needed us now more than ever before. In the silence of the seven days, with only my Additional Maths textbook offering its condolences, I felt a profound sense of belonging—that if I chose a different path, I would live the rest of my life haunted by my own reflection, wondering what could have been.
